What We Did for "Crazy Hat Day"

My daughter goes to an awesome summer daycamp through our town's rec department. They go on field trips to local beaches and lakes, they've been to Splashtown and Fort Williams and the Gray Animal Park and the York Animal Kingdom. They have an old-fashioned ice cream truck come for the kids every Monday afternoon. They've had a "Bike Rodeo" and taught bike safety to all the kids, and one day they had a group come and set up a climbing wall for the kids. In other words, my kid has had more fun in the past month and a half than I could ever have drummed up the ambition, planning, or money to pay for if I'd tried to find fun stuff to do on our own. Camp tuition = worth every penny.

Last Friday was Crazy Hat Day and we wanted to show our enthusiasm and camp spirit by making something awesome. After all, prizes were being offered for "craziest hat." Everyone likes prizes, right?

We started with a plain white canvas hat ($2 from Wallyworld) and plugged in the trusty old glue gun.

Halle's job was to remove all the leaves (silk flowers: 4/$1 at Marden's), organize the different colored blossoms in piles as I snipped them from the wires with the cutters, and give me "creative direction." And by creative direction I mean pointing and barking "Mama! Put it dere!" and "Ooooooh how 'bout dere? Put it dere! Dat'll look awesome!" I was going to do just the gluegun part and let her stick the flowers in the wet glue, but once she realized the glue was hot, she was more than happy to stick to barking orders and saying "oooooh!" a lot.

And she was right! For less than $5 we had a great time doing a craft project and we both think "dat came out awesome!"

We call it the Crazy Nature Girl Hat.
Let me know if you want one to call your very own;
Halle will be selling them to make pocket change for the ice cream truck. ;-)
